North Avondale's Historic Herschede Mansion Designed by Noted Architect S.S. Godley is Now For Sale

The historic Frank Herschede mansion, a home built in North Avondale for clock maker Frank Herschede and designed by Cincinnati architect S.S. Godley, is for sale for $575,000. According to Godley's obituary, the mansion was built in Beaux-Arts style in 1908. Famous buildings in this style include Memorial Hall in Over-the-Rhine and New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. Located at 3886 Reading Road, the enormous 8,502 square foot home is divided between 17 rooms, seven bedrooms and two full and three half bathrooms. The historical property also features a detached five-car garage complete with 500 square feet of chauffeur's quarters. Some of the architectural highlights of the home are the vestibule doors at the entrance. They were designed by Godley and manufactured by the L. Schreiber & Sons Co., a famous ironworks company in Cincinnati. Godley designed a number of homes all around Cincinnati including homes in Clifton and Glendale, but the Frank Herschede mansion is arguably his most well-known work.
