Washington Park’s Summer Cinema series continues with yet another classic that’s fun for the whole family. Watch as a boy befriends a little alien while attempting to return him to his home planet in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. EVENT: Sugar Rush
Cincinnati’s annual celebration dedicated to all things sweet is back. Sugar Rush, hosted by CityBeat Events, takes place at the Cincinnati Art Museum, where over a dozen local bakeries, ice cream shops and candy stores will converge to make it the sweetest spot in the city. Guests will vote for their favorite treat of the night and the winner will receive bragging rights and an award to display at their shop for a full year. There will also be a panel of experts handing out special recognitions for the most creative dessert. Expect tasty treats from Queen City favorites including Holtman’s Donuts, Del Gardo’s, Starlight Donut Lab and Ruby’s Chocolates. 5:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets are currently sold out. ONSTAGE: Girl in the Red Corner at Know Theatre
Written by Stephen Spotswood, Girl in the Red Corner hones in on heroine Halo (Tess Talbot), a tough but caring young woman stuck in the worst rut of her life. Recently unemployed and fresh off an acrimonious, credit-annihilating divorce, Halo finds an outlet for her frustrations in the form of mixed martial arts (MMA). Stuck living back in her mother’s home, the gym offers the gift of independence and self-satisfaction for a dejected Halo. As her friendship with trainer Gina (Abi Esmena) blossoms, so does the true fighter inside. Girl in the Red Corner runs through Aug. 17 at Know Theatre, 1120 Jackson St., Over-the-Rhine. EVENT: Cincinnati Zoo History and Hijinks Tour
The Cincinnati Zoo’s 50-year animal care veteran and trainer Gary Denzler leads this immersive after-hours tour telling tales about the second oldest zoo in America. Travel back in time as Denzler leads you around the grounds and regales you with “fun and factual” stories about the people, animals and history that have made the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden the popular attraction that it is today. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday. $15; $11 members. EVENT: Great Inland Seafood Festival
Some say the mighty Ohio River could never compare to the wonders of the Atlantic Ocean and all its seafood fare. This four-day festival says otherwise. Grab all the fresh fish you can as local restaurants bring the coast to the Midwest. There will even be whole Maine lobsters, oysters on the half-shell, king crab and gator on a stick, plus live music from local bands and items for sale from Flutter-Bye Boutique and The Bluegrass Market. 5-11 p.m. Thursday and Friday; noon-11 p.m. Saturday; noon-9 p.m. Sunday. EVENT: Wild About Wine
Part of the Cincinnati Zoo’s Toast to the Wild series, Wild About Wine is a super-popular after-hours party that invites the public to wander the zoo grounds while sipping on glasses of vino. After listening to feedback, this year’s event features extended hours, more zoo access and a larger selection of drinks to sample. Each ticket includes access to zoo exhibits, 12 drink samples, a commemorative wine glass, a welcome beverage, animal encounters, live music and a meet-and-greet with conservation scientists. Food will be available for purchase with menu options found online. COMEDY: Caleb Synan
Comedian Caleb Synan first gained national attention as one of the new faces at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal a few years back. In addition to starring in two different web shows for Comedy Central, he has also appeared on Conan, as well as Last Comic Standing. “My dad’s growing his own food now, that’s a good sign,” he tells an audience. “Anytime I’m there he says, ‘You know anybody that likes squash in L.A.? I’ll send some squash with you.’” Syanan says. “That’s not something I can know about a city.” Originally from Northern Georgia (he was named “wittiest” in high school there), he now lives in New York City. “I’ve been in New York for several years now and still don’t feel anything seeping in as far as unjustified anger.” Through Sunday. $8-$14. The Contemporary Arts Center promises a wild night, as inspired by its current Creatures: When Species Meet exhibit. EVENT: 1940s Day
Go full pin-up or Rosie the Riveter: The Cincinnati Museum Center is entering a vintage timewarp on Saturday for its ever-popular 1940s Day. The event, which has in recent years been held at Lunken Airport during museum renovation, returns to Union Terminal for an immersive homage to the decade. There will be World War II-era cars on display along with period-appropriate music, fashion and dancing. There will also be a costume contest for those who want to break out their finest victory rolls and wiggle dresses. Guests, including Holocaust survivor Dr. Renate Neeman and members of the Japanese American Citizens League, will be sharing their experiences of living through this pivotal decade. Plus, you can enjoy a 1940s Day signature cocktail to help you Lindy Hop all day. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. EVENT: Second Sunday On Main
Over-the-Rhine’s monthly summer street festival takes it to New Orleans for a Second Line parade — a tradition that reflects the line of dancers who follow the main event (hence the name). Starting at 1 p.m., participants can follow the Nasty Nati Brass Band in a short procession around Over-the-Rhine with the Q-Kidz Dance Team and the Afrakan Artist Alliance Stiltwalkers; feathers, beads, parasols, glitter and any other over-the-top attire is encouraged. The rest of the fest will feature mainstage performances from Romel Sims, The Hot Magnolias, Cincy Steel and an encore from Nasty Nati. In addition to the parade, find all your favorite SSOM activities including a biergarten, vendor booths, food trucks and Main Street merchants. Noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Free.
